2011 SABAA INTERPROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT 19 - 23 SEPTEMBER
The 2011 SABAA Interprovincial Tournament was held at the Tzaneen Dam over 5 days- 19 to 23 September. This year 9 provinces participated - each province fielding 4 boats, manned by 2 anglers each. The competition was structured over 5 days as follows: DAY 1 : PRACTISE DAY 2 : PLAN & REST DAY 3 : DAY 4 : COMPETITION DAYS DAY 5 : The format of the competition was on a strictly TEAM basis,no individualism, only the entire team score to be counted. A 5 fish / 300mm per boat limit was the order of the day. Each fish bagged scored 1 point, with additional points pro-rated according to weight. eg. a 1.3kg fish = 1.3 additional points. Conditions ranged from extremely hot and cloudless, with temperatures soaring beyond 35 degrees c, to a cold and rainy 25 degrees c. DAY 1 was practise day but with unbearably hot temperatures, most of the boats left the water by 1 pm. The KZN COASTALS teams strategy was to disperse their 4 boats in different directions in order to explore the differing patterns of fish at different depths. This ensured that they discovered the prime fishing spots to launch their attack on day 3. KZN COASTALS chose the steep rocky banks and rock piles in the water up to 4.5 m as the best fish-producing source. The water was gin clear- demanding plenty of finesse to bag the winning fish. DAY 2 dawned cold and rainy- ideal for the KZN COASTALS to plot, plan and prepare the format of their morning attack. DAY 3, competition day....the boats set off to a flight-style start- the first group of boats leaving at 6.15am. It took KZN COASTALS LIONEL & CINDY CROW, of CROW BASS TACKLE, less than an hour to bag ALL of their fish. KZN COASTALS Schalk and Cameron followed swiftly suit. Unfortunately KZN COASTALS fourth boat was disqualified leaving a total score for competition day 1 at 26 points. DAY 4, the second competition day,saw the bite slowing down considerably in the cold and wet.The bulk of the fish were caught on whacky-rigged weightless 4 inch yum-dingers watermelon candy, rigged circle hooks size 1/0 or 2/0. KZN COASTALS boat 2 used Z2s. A total of 33 points for competition day 2 was notched up by our KZN COASTALS team. The last competition day was hot and dry once again. KZN COASTALS scored 30 points for the day and came in SECOND overall - losing to Eastern Province by a slender 115gs. Our LIONEL & CINDY CROW caught the second BIGGEST bag.....only 4g less than the winner....WELL DONE!!! Overall the 2011 SABAA Interprovincial Tournament was extremely well-run with a spirit of great comaradary being enjoyed by all team members. The KZN COASTALS team captain SCHALK GORDON ran a tight ship and did an excellent job at the helm of the team ship. Firm friendships were struck up between our team members who thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the tournament and vowed to snatch the title for KZN COASTALS in 2012.
